India is home to millions of people with heart problems. Moreover, heart problems are rising at an alarming rate in the country leading to higher morbidity and mortality rates. Various factors such as smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, lack of exercise, obesity, and stress can take a toll on one’s heart. Dr Narayan Gadkar, Consultant Cardiologist, Zen Multi speciality Hospital, Chembur said, “The 2 years of the pandemic were stressful for the hospital staff and their family members as well. To create awareness and encourage the hospital staff and their relatives to lead healthy life and take utmost care of the heart, we decided to come up with a cardiac screening camp. So, the staff and their relatives with co-morbidities or above the age of 45 underwent tests such as HGT, ECG, BMI, and 2 D Echo. Heart attack cases are spiking in older people as well as youngsters. Do not ignore any red flags of a heart attack such as breathlessness, chest pain, sweating profusely, pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach, and nausea or light-headedness. Regular cardiac screening is important for everyone to keep heart problems at bay. Go for screening every year after the doctor’s advice.”

She suggested the participants eat a diet inclusive of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, pulses, and legumes, exercise daily, quit smoking, and DE-stress via yoga and meditation.
