In West Bengal more than 50% women are suffering from low Haemoglobin or Anaemia as per NHM study.
These women are not even aware of their Anaemic status and continue to suffer silently the low energy and lethargy. Putting family before self, they ignore nutritious diet and keep bleeding heavily.
Government of India has addressed this burning issue by launching “Anaemia mukt Bharat “or Poshan Abhiyaan . It is seen that babies born of anaemic women are often low birth babies and with stunted growth or short height. GOI has launched it for children and pregnant mothers in its first phase who are being given iron tablets.
However non pregnant women have been left out in this phase. Rotary club of Salt Lake metropolitan has identified this gap and has taken up “Matri Raksha “project to address this burning issue.
Under Matri Raksha project supported by Rotary clubs from Switzerland and The Rotary foundation it envisages screening of 20,000 women for anaemia and educate them about nutrition and treat them with medicines or surgery. Goal to have 3% rise in Haemoglobinometer every year.
